The Grand Canyon!

Grand Canyon day started off at the obscene time of 0610. Lucky I didn't have a buffet the night before! There were 7 of us on the tour with a wonderful local guide named Tracie. She had a huge personality and we ended up hearing her entire life story over the course of the day! 1st stop - breakfast at Burger King in Boulder City.......

Next stop the amazing Hoover Dam. This was a target for 9/11 (as was the Las Vegas Strip and Seattle Space Needle) so they have built a huge bridge spanning the nearly canyon to divert traffic from crossing the dam. Standing on the bridge gives a spectacular view of the dam.

We next had a short diversion to Route 66. We visited a small town named Seligman. Apparently some of the old cars here inspired the animated movie "Cars". Not hard to see why! A very cute town..........

OK then onto the Canyon. There is really no way to describe the Grand Canyon adequately. I had heard and read how amazing it is but I was still totally gobsmacked. It is surrounded by flat desert and then out of nowhere you arrive at the rim. That first sight has to be one of the most incredible visions I have ever seen. It brought tears to my eyes!! It is unbelievably vast, beautiful, majestic, etc, etc. Those of you who have been there will understand my inability convey the right words; those of you who haven't been, put it on your bucket list. I will put photos up but they don't come close to showing the true beauty of this natural wonder.

We had the most amazing day. Usually in the middle of winter it is freezing, with snow and a haze covering a lot of the Canyon. But we had a warm day, a perfect view, minimal tourists and a beautiful sunset.

We had gone to the South rim of the canyon rather than the more popular West rim (which is closer to Las Vegas and has the see-through 'skywalk'). Although it has better views and less tourists, the down side of the South rim was the 4 hour trip back to Las Vegas. Luckily there was little traffic and I was back in my hotel by 10pm. Well worth the long and exhausting day!

Now I can focus on my Buffet choice...........................
